- Coinbase and AWS integrated the x402 protocol into CloudFront and WAF.
- Websites and APIs will be able to monetize traffic from AI agents.
- The first payment asset was USDC on the Base network.
- The protocol was handed over to the Linux Foundation as an open standard.
The crypto exchange Coinbase, together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has launched an integration of the x402 protocol that allows web publishers and API providers to accept payments from AI agents. The solution works through AWS CloudFront and AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) and, according to the companies, could cover roughly a quarter of the internet.
The first supported currency was the stablecoin USDC on the Base network, but the protocol is designed to support other blockchains, digital assets, and even traditional payment systems in the future.
Monetizing agent traffic
Coinbase noted that an increasing number of AI agents automatically access websites, APIs, and digital services to obtain information or perform tasks.
Previously, resource owners predominantly either blocked such traffic or provided access for free. The new integration makes it possible to treat AI agents as a separate category of paying clients.
In addition to the per-request payment model, x402 supports:
- batched micropayments;
- subscriptions;
- payment depending on the actual use of the service.
Coinbase emphasized that x402 is an open protocol. After launch, the company handed it over to a dedicated foundation within the Linux Foundation. The foundation's founders also included AWS and more than twenty companies from the cloud technology, artificial intelligence, and financial services sectors.

In addition, Coinbase introduced two services to develop the ecosystem:
- x402 Bazaar — an open catalog of services that support x402;
- Agentic Market — a catalog of verified services for agentic applications.
AWS Edge Services General Manager Nishit Savni stated that the integration makes it possible to determine not only the identity and purpose of an AI agent but also to verify its ability to make a payment before the content is delivered.
Brian Foster, head of Infrastructure Growth at Coinbase, noted that launching x402 in CloudFront and WAF gives web publishers the opportunity to monetize traffic from AI agents without the need to deploy new infrastructure or carry out separate integrations.
As a reminder, we previously reported that Fireblocks launched a service for AI payments and joined the x402 Foundation.
