The main cryptocurrency news of the morning of June 18
Tether is winding down the Alloy by Tether platform and its associated gold-backed stablecoin aUSDT, just two years after launch.
The company explained the decision by a review of priorities and a desire to focus on products with higher demand and liquidity — above all on the gold token XAUT.
aUSDT allowed users to deposit XAUT as collateral and mint a dollar token without selling their gold assets. The closure will be phased: new positions are already unavailable, and aUSDT can be returned and gold withdrawn until September 17.
This is not Tether's first discontinued product: in February the company wound down the yuan-based stablecoin CNHT, and in November the euro-based EURT. XAUT remains a popular stablecoin with a capitalization of $3 billion.
