A client (Client) is software that allows a user or device to connect to a blockchain network and interact with it. Through a client, transfers are made, balances are checked, and network data is synchronized. The most familiar example of a client is a cryptocurrency wallet, but more complex programs also belong to this category.
Types of clients
Clients differ in how much network data they store and process. The level of independence and the demands on the device's resources depend on this.
- a full node — stores the entire history of the blockchain and verifies transactions on its own;
- a light client — stores only part of the data and turns to other nodes;
- a wallet client — focused on managing funds and signing transactions.
The choice of client depends on the tasks: for ordinary storage and transfers a light wallet is enough, whereas a full node is needed by those who want maximum independence and participation in the operation of the network. All clients follow the same protocol rules, thanks to which the network remains consistent.
