Only 16% of Americans expect a positive effect on society from artificial intelligence, while about 40% believe the impact will be negative. Such results were obtained by the Pew Research center following a survey of 5,119 adult U.S. residents.
Skepticism about AI also extends to state institutions. 67% of respondents do not believe that the U.S. authorities will be able to effectively regulate this sphere. Another 59% do not trust companies engaged in artificial intelligence development. Almost two-thirds of respondents believe that AI is developing too quickly.
The most skeptical about artificial intelligence are U.S. citizens under 30 who vote for the Democrats. Only 14% of representatives of this category of respondents expect a positive impact of the technology on society.
At the same time, the researchers pointed to the growth of everyday use of neural networks. About a quarter of surveyed Americans reported that they turn to chatbots daily. The most popular service is ChatGPT: it is used by 44% of adult U.S. residents, which is more than double the 2023 level. Next come Gemini (24%), Copilot (17%), and Meta AI (14%).
Similar sentiments were recorded by other pollsters as well. In May the international research company YouGov reported that 71% of Americans consider AI development too fast. Pessimists in assessing the long-term impact of the technology on society turned out to be twice as numerous as optimists — 51% versus 25%.
In January 2025 YouGov staff recorded a milder picture: 35% of respondents expected a positive impact of AI on society and 34% a negative one.
Recall that in May 2025 a joint study by Reuters and the analytics firm Ipsos claimed that 61% of Americans consider artificial intelligence a threat to humanity.
