A cryptocurrency exchange, or crypto exchange (cryptocurrency exchange), is an online platform where users buy, sell and exchange digital assets. The exchange brings buyers and sellers together, keeps a record of orders and ensures that trades are executed at market or user-defined prices. It is one of the main ways to enter and exit the cryptocurrency market.
Types of crypto exchanges
- Platforms that trade exclusively in cryptocurrency-to-cryptocurrency pairs.
- Services that support exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat money (so-called trading sites).
- Centralized exchanges, where the operator manages users' funds and orders.
- Decentralized exchanges, where trades take place directly between wallets via smart contracts.
On a centralized exchange a user usually goes through registration and verification, and their assets are held in the platform's accounts. This is convenient, but it creates dependence on the operator's reliability. Decentralized exchanges give more control over your own keys but require a higher level of technical literacy from the user.
When choosing an exchange, it is important to assess its reputation, security measures, liquidity and fees. Storing large sums on an exchange carries additional risks, so it is often recommended to withdraw assets to a personal wallet.
