It has been revealed which analytics tools North Korean hackers use. The CryptoQuant platform recorded a visit by a user with an IP address from the DPRK. The service reported the unusual observation in a post on the X platform.

An understanding of the internal specifics of the internet in the country explains why the visit is backed precisely by professional hackers, and not an ordinary citizen.

Details of the visit

The screenshot in the post, from the Amplitude analytics system, shows the parameters of the visit. The page title Bitcoin: MVRV Ratio, a referral from google.com, the Mac OS X operating system and the country — North Korea. The author of the post suggested that hidden top-level structures of the country are now interested in online analytics. If the guesses are correct, interest in rare metrics is being shown at the highest level.

The report about hackers is by no means accidental. In North Korea, access to the worldwide network is closed for the vast majority of citizens. The internet in the country remains a privilege for select individuals.

The network is available mainly to those connected to state, embassy or military structures. That is precisely why a visit from a North Korean IP address most likely points to a state agent.

Judging by the screenshot, the user searched Google for data on the MVRV Ratio metric and landed on CryptoQuant's specialized page.

By itself, a single visit does not make it possible to identify the user. Nor does it confirm direct involvement with state structures. Determining the country by IP address indicates only the point of access to the network, not a specific person.

The MVRV Ratio (Market Value to Realized Value) compares an asset's market capitalization with its realized capitalization and is used to assess how overvalued or undervalued bitcoin is relative to the average price at which coins were acquired. It was precisely a North Korean who took an interest in this metric — unexpectedly.
