Algorand prepares for the quantum era: the blockchain announces a large-scale security upgrade by 2027

Algorand has presented a roadmap to protect the network from the quantum threat.

The Algorand Foundation has announced a new roadmap for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography, aiming to ensure broad quantum resilience of the network by the end of 2027. The first rollout stages start as early as the third quarter of 2026.

The foundation emphasized that the issue of post-quantum protection long ago ceased to be a purely academic topic.

"The question is no longer whether the transition to post-quantum security will happen. The question is whether organizations will be ready when it does", — the Algorand Foundation noted.

Betting on Falcon and cryptographic agility

The company recalled that it began preparing for quantum risks back in 2022, when it integrated the State Proofs mechanism using the Falcon cryptographic scheme. Now the project is moving to the next stage — launching native Falcon-1024 accounts without the need for additional software constructs.

Starting from the third quarter of 2026, the network will receive:

native support for post-quantum Falcon-1024 accounts;
support for several cryptographic schemes simultaneously;
hybrid accounts that will combine classical and post-quantum signatures;
next-generation multisignature tools;
updates to the SDK, AlgoKit and Pera Wallet.

The foundation explained that it does not want to abandon the current algorithms entirely due to the lack of many years of practical use of the new cryptographic schemes.

"We cannot assume that these post-quantum schemes are completely free of classical vulnerabilities or mathematical flaws", — the developers emphasized.

That is precisely why Algorand chose a hybrid approach, which should provide protection against both classical and potential quantum attacks.

Separately, the team is working on modernizing the VRF (Verifiable Random Function) randomness mechanism, which currently relies on elliptic-curve cryptography and is considered vulnerable to future quantum computing. The corresponding scientific study is planned to be presented in early 2027.

The quantum race is gaining momentum

Algorand's announcement came against the backdrop of the crypto industry's increasingly active preparation for the so-called Q-Day — the moment when quantum computers will be able to break modern encryption algorithms.

Recently the research firm Project Eleven, in its report The Quantum Threat to Blockchains – 2026, stated that the baseline scenario for the arrival of the "quantum day" assumes 2033. Additional attention to the topic was drawn by a statement from Ethereum developer Justin Drake, who estimated the probability of Q-Day arriving by 2032 at 50%. According to him, Google Quantum AI has made significant progress in optimizing Shor's algorithm for attacks on elliptic-curve cryptography.

Algorand itself also refers to recent research by Google Quantum AI, according to which a powerful quantum computer will eventually be able to run Shor's algorithm using fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.

Against this backdrop, more and more blockchain projects are announcing their own strategies for transitioning to the post-quantum era:

TRON reported the launch of a post-quantum upgrade of its main network;
Ripple presented a four-stage plan to modernize the XRP Ledger by 2028;
Solana reported that it has its own strategy for protection against quantum threats;
Zcash announced the introduction of quantum-recoverable wallets and a transition to a new security architecture;
NEAR Protocol confirmed the launch of post-quantum signatures on the testnet as early as June 2026.

Algorand emphasizes that blockchains are built as long-term infrastructure, so preparation for the quantum era must begin long before a real threat emerges.

"The systems being built today must support financial applications, digital assets and global commerce for many years. Ensuring their security in a post-quantum world is one of the most important challenges for the industry", — the foundation stated.

In parallel, governments are also increasing investment in the sector. In particular, the US recently announced a $2 billion quantum technology support program, under which IBM and the new company Anderon will work on creating a specialized quantum chip-manufacturing facility.

Opinions and community reaction

The crypto community has no single opinion on the pace of development of quantum computing, but more and more market participants agree that preparation for the so-called Q-Day should begin right now.

Some experts view the current initiatives of blockchain projects as a necessary preventive step. Thus, an X user under the pseudonym Eminas noted that the threat may seem distant, but a large part of the crypto infrastructure still has no quantum protection:

"If quantum computing ultimately breaks current standards, the winners will not be the projects that reacted the fastest, but those who started preparing the earliest".

At the same time, other market participants warn of potential risks for investors in the absence of effective protection mechanisms. A crypto analyst under the nickname MAGIC believes that the approach of Q-Day could intensify capital outflows from unprotected assets:

"As Q-Day approaches, the probability will grow that investors will start leaving the crypto market until reliable protection is implemented. This could trigger a large-scale outflow of capital from cryptocurrencies without quantum protection and even lead to the deepest bear market in the industry's history".

That said, some industry representatives urge against dramatizing the situation. In particular, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao previously stated that quantum computing is not a reason for panic. According to him, the industry needs to gradually move to quantum-resistant encryption algorithms, although this process will require coordination between projects and in some cases may lead to network forks.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong holds a similar position, calling the quantum threat to crypto assets "manageable". He emphasized that this is not an existential problem for blockchains but an engineering task that can be solved by updating cryptographic standards and introducing new protection technologies.

At the same time, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson assesses the risks far more seriously. He previously noted that the probability of a real quantum threat to the crypto industry emerging by 2033 exceeds 50%, and therefore blockchain projects should prepare for such a scenario in advance, without waiting for the moment the problem becomes critical.
