Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz — the fragile truce is broken

On June 20, 2026 the «Khatam al-Anbiya» Central Headquarters announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. The military explained the decision by suspected violations of the Islamabad memorandum on the part of the US and Israel.
Such a statement runs counter to the latest attempts to reduce tension and once again creates risks for global oil logistics — the markets had already managed to price in hopes of an easing of the situation.
Official statement
The «Khatam al-Anbiya» Central Headquarters team, which coordinates the work of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran's regular army, distributed the statement through state media.
The announcement stresses that the blockade of the strait is the «first step» in response to violations of the ceasefire agreement. The military also threatened new measures if the aggression continues.
Major Iranian outlets, including Mehr News, published this message.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the key hubs for global oil trade. About 20 million barrels of crude pass through it daily.
This volume accounts for roughly 20–25% of global seaborne oil transport. In addition, large shipments of liquefied gas from Qatar and the UAE travel along this route.
Such disruptions in the region have more than once led to a sharp rise in energy prices and noticeably increased carriers' costs around the world.
