Microsoft reports progress on topological qubits

Microsoft has reported improved materials in its topological qubit system. In the new device the company replaced aluminum with lead in the superconducting layer and changed the semiconductor structure, which increased the lifetime of the parity state from less than 10 ms to more than 20 seconds, Ars Technica writes.
Separately, Atom Computing announced progress in error correction on neutral atoms. The company demonstrated a toric code in operation and the retention of logical information for up to 90 correction cycles, including the replacement of lost atoms with spares. According to Atom Computing, this is the first demonstration of repeated error correction of this kind on a neutral-atom architecture.
